My Testing Was Impressive
Practical Golf is not a place where I do too many reviews. It’s impossible to predict how others will feel about a club. I know many of you want to see results, so I’m more than happy to experiment to see if there are any noticeable changes.
My Titleist 917 D3 Driver was compared to the Callaway Epic Flash. My Titleist driver is custom fit and is optimal for my swing since I am a low spin player. Many golfers didn’t like the 917 D3 because they considered it too spinny. Titleist addressed this issue in recent TS lines. I have my Titleist driver now for 2 years and it works great. But I am maxed out on distance, which is why I was impressed with the following results:

It was due to launching the ball slightly faster and farther. I registered some of the longest drives I’ve ever seen on my launch monitor with ball speed approaching 155 mph (I usually don’t crack 150 mph) and some drives going more than 290 yards.
You could say I was a little impressed with the Callaway Epic Flash. While it’s possible that I could have dialed the driver in a bit better with a better shaft/head combo than I did, my experience was limited to what I had on hand. Aside aside, the club’s look was great. It felt fantastic at impact. These are all subjective opinions and may differ from player to player. When deciding whether or no to purchase a driver, performance should be considered.

Callaway created the Epic driver with revolutionary Jailbreak technology two years ago. Epic golf equipment is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after. The Jailbreak technology delivered incredible performance and speed improvements.
Epic Flash represents another breakthrough in driver technology and looks poised to surpass its predecessors.
I first tested both the Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero drivers at Callaway’s Ely Performance Centre in Carlsbad, California, at the beginning of December and I’ve been playing with them extensively ever since. They are worthy replacements for Rogue and Epic drivers. Both deliver in all areas of performance.
Let me explain why.
Overall impression
There are plenty of websites that run the numbers through the gamut, comparing all the new drivers. I don’t think you should be relying on these numbers or those tests to make your decision about the next driver. One golfer’s ideal score is not the same for another. However, I wanted to know how frequently golfers replace their driver. So I took to Twitter to find out.
This means that most golfers will change their drivers if a better idea or technology comes along. 77% golfers have a driver at least three years old. You might be one of these golfers and wondering if it is time to replace your driver with the latest technology.
The question is whether spending $500+ on an upgrade to your equipment is worthwhile, or if it is within your financial means. If you’re serious about improving your game, a professional fitting expert should be on your list.
Callaway Epic Flash should be your first test driver.

Conclusion
The Callaway Epic Flash has done extremely well for Callaway this year. Irons and Drivers, the epic series that includes both Irons and Drivers has proven to be a significant improvement over the Epic Flash and they are also challenging the competition.
The one true downside to the Epic driver was the price point when it was first released.
This makes it the best driver for the weekend 15, handicapper.
Callaway epic flashes will get more attention as they become available and their price drops.
It is vital to understand, which hopefully the review clearly stated, that flash drivers have the potential to impact both the future of the game as well as the future technology of clubs.

First, I want to thank MGS for choosing me as the reviewer of the Most Wanted driver 2019. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of waking up and seeing one of the moderators has sent you a private message with a title like “Callaway Epic Flash Testers!”
Kory is my name and Hawaii is where I call home. As a child of a golfing family, my passion for the sport began at an early age. I had some clubs that an uncle of mine chopped down and slapped some grips on and would join my stepdad on the range. Living in Las Vegas at the time, when I was around the age of 10 was when I really started to understand the concepts of hitting down into the ball instead of trying to sweep it, thinking about the next shot, etc., and started to break 100 from the ladies’ tees. The winter holidays were in Hawaii so I could play all year. I was unable to find my passion for the game after college. However, friends helped me get back on the greens two years ago. Since then, I am obsessed again. While my playing partners can range from former NCAA college champions to those who are just starting to play and who shoot in the 100s regularly, I have never been one to care too much about their playing abilities. I’m on the course to have a good time, and whether I’m playing well or not, I enjoy myself.
I’ve never joined a club, so I’ve never had an “official” handicap, but I typically shoot 80-83 and play courses around 6300-6500 yards comfortably. 18 Birdies has me currently at 9 hdcp. But, because I was selected for this test, Arccos is my new tool and I intend to continue using it to evaluate my game. My strength is my ability to produce decent clubhead speed considering my height. However, consistency and my inability to make putts are my biggest challenges. The average driver swing speed for me is 103-105 miles per hour when I’m hitting it well. My swing pace has been described as very fluid. My friends often quote me as saying “I play golf for hit driver.” I love the club and I will not be happy if it requires me to get off the tee at the right position. I’ll look for any excuse to let the big dog eat, and that usually lands me in the soup on those courses, so I tend to avoid those courses whenever I can.
My typical ball flight is a mid-height (or what I consider to be mid-height) draw, and my miss is a block when I get stuck, or an over draw/hook when I flip to compensate. I’ve been working on moving my path a little more out-to-in since my Flash fitting (more on this later).
As you can see, I really enjoy hitting the driver’s seat and trying them out for my game. If you take into account that I’ve had to change three times since joining MGS, it is likely I enjoy it too much. While none of them were horrible drivers, they all gave me an advantage over my previous driver each time that I test. Below is a listing of all of my drivers, from 2017 to now (all were fit, whether custom at my local store or at range demo days).
Testing Results
Epic Flash has impressed me after 11 rounds of tracking (63 shots), and several range sessions. I’m going to try to do my best to NOT sound like the biggest Callaway fanboy (I’m not) for the rest of this review, but this driver truly has me smiling from ear to ear.
It looks (9 points out of 10) The shape really does look ready to shoot the ball to address. It’s more stretched back compared to something like the pear-shaped TS3. They are subtle graphics that you can barely see unless you are directly under the sun. I enjoy the gloss look. The carbon fiber’s fade to the edges is sleek and elegant. The subtle yellow/green outer paint is nice. Combined with that simple Callaway Chervon sign for alignment, the driver looks phenomenal and not overly busy down by the ball.
It’s a different story on the bottom, which is why it didn’t get a 10. I know for some, it doesn’t matter much because you never see it, but it didn’t feel “right” to give it a perfect score if I thought there was room for improvement. The green/yellow colourway was not something I liked. It looks fine in moderation, like the pinstripes at the perimeter. But the Green Bay Packer Green and Gold isn’t my cup of tea.
From the back you can see more of the carbon weave which I still think looks great, and after 11 rounds the face has held up nicely as well.
Sound & Feel (8 points out of 10) There have been many discussions about the sound and feel of the driver through this thread. Because this sounds so subjective it is easy to see how each person could have a completely different experience. To my ears, the sound is more of a “crack” than a metallic sound – like the difference between a wooden baseball bat and a metal one. Of course, it still has a bit of a metal sound since it’s made of metal, but I think the carbon crown mutes it nicely and does a good job of changing the acoustics. While no one will be able to see you through the range, your partners in the band will know when your instrument has struck the middle of BOOMTOWN USA’s national anthem. Absolutely no issues with the sound for me.
It feels very soft across the entire face, and I believe that this is true for all areas of my face. It is very easy for my to know where it’s at. Also, the sweet spot feels soft and springy so you can tell immediately when one’s gone. Knowing where my strike zone is on the face helps me adjust mid-round. This is not Mizuno’s butter forged soft. However, it’s soft enough to be comfortable and not feel cheap. Because I expected something as revolutionary and flashy like Flash face to bring me different emotions, I decided to take points off.
Basic Characteristics (20 out of 20 points) Yes, I’m giving this driver a perfect score for this section. I find this driver to be more precise than my TS2 after only 2 rounds. I’ll admit that TS2 didn’t really stand a fair chance due to an ill-fitting shaft, but the results that I’ve gotten from Flash are enough to where I don’t even care to try anything else currently on the market – and that’s saying something coming from a driver ho.
Do Any Pros Use Epic Flash Driver?
Who is using it on tour? Callaway’s successful driver journey continues with an epic flash driver. The epic and rogue models have been highly acclaimed and were successful over the years. And now, in 2019, they are breaking new heights with their epic flash driver. Callaway has a great understanding of what golfers need.
