The Test
The Belfry was my first stop on the trip to see the Epic range at the PGA National. I then was sent the fitting pack from Callaway where I fitted myself into the correct shaft and tried the drivers inside at LSH Auto, Mercedes Benz Stockport using Trackman 4 and Titleist Pro V1x balls.
Then I chose my favorite head, and went on to test the club during rounds over Christmas and New Years.

Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic driver Review
Before I started frittering my life away reviewing golf equipment for your pleasure, I qualified in marketing so I am also very interested in the brand positioning of equipment.
If someone is going to call a driver Epic then they need to be real because there aren’t many places you can go if it goes wrong.
It’s refreshing to see businesses stake their claim every once in a while and say, “Here we are.” Callaway’s Great Big Bertha Epic driver is one such moment.
Callaway was the pioneer in COR regulations in 2003. Models like the ERC were fast-driving and Callaway is now back with their new Jailbreak technology.
By removing the crown from the sole, this solves the problem that the crown and sole are diverging on impact. This reduces vertical stretching and energy loss. Callaway can stiffen the skull by inserting two titanium bars of 3g into the frame behind the mouth to link the sole and crown. This allows the face to move more freely, which increases the ball speed.
Although I’ve written “thinner crown”/lower CG many times, this one is my favorite. The Epic Triaxial Carbon crown, which is 33% thinner than any previous version and 64% lighter that the Callaway XR 16 titanium crown, is 52%. This Epic is based on the Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver’s titanium exoskeleton. However, the Epic now uses Triaxial Carbon to create the carbon as a single unit, and is bonded with the titanium from within.
Doc Hoc, the designer and the boys 37g have a lot of fun with this combination. The face is 20% thinner that the XR 16 driver. This allows them to translate the club head speed to ball speed much more effectively.

Is Callaway Epic Driver Worth It?
