Although I tried many different squirrel trap baits over the years, peanut butter was my best. There is a trail of peanuts that leads to the trap. The trap also has peanut butter at the end. Also, peanut butter has been rolled into peanuts in a peanut butter ball to create peanut-coated peanut peanut butter. This is what they are able to eat within hours.
The problem is, in many of the traps they can steal the bait without setting off the trip. Because squirrels are small, it can take quite some time to trap an animal trap.
Havahart Two Door Small Animal Trap
Smallest Havahart trap available. The trap’s two-door design is ideal for squirrel, weasel, chipmunk, and rodent capture. The squirrels seem to be very comfortable around it. It is not a problem for them to steal the bait once in a while, though they may forget about setting off the trap trip mechanism.

I put a trail full of peanuts inside the trap. Then, I scattered them around. I set the trap and let it fall.
Set the trap for about two seconds. Just place it on the ground with a handful peanuts and throw them in the direction of the animal. I had intended to put it in our garden to attract our house guest but he refused to buy the trap in that environment.
The ground is a better place for it to work. I placed it in the woods 50ft from the house. It catches at minimum one squirrel each day.
Sometimes, I went out to check the squirrelinator but found that the bait had disappeared. I wondered if the bait had been taken by a raccoon that had climbed through the trap’s top. It’s possible, but it would be simple to solve by placing a board above the trap.
Finally, I realized it wasn’t a squirrel but a raccoon. Their “fledgement” is when they grow to be almost the same size as a normal-sized squirrel. Once, I could see that one was caught in the trap. I then saw the small squirrel dive through the sidewire when I took the trap.
The sight was 2ft in front of me and it would have been hard for me to believe. This was not an easy task for him. He needed to move a millimeter further and that would have been impossible.
