Aldi, a German supermarket chain, has held sway in the US market since the 1970s. Lidl however is now the dominant grocer. Lidl, which has its headquarters in Virginia now boasts about 100 stores to Aldi’s 2,200+.
Aldi and Lidl have many similarities. Both grocery stores sell private label items, both focus on saving customers and are located in the same locations. Aldi has 10,000 stores worldwide and Lidl has 11,200. Both Aldi as well as Lidl were founded by the Albrecht brothers.
While there were rumors that Aldi was cheaper than Lidl (from a variety of websites), I found it to be not true. After comparing some random items, however, I am not certain that is the case. First, I researched produce.

There was a slight difference in the extra virgin olive oils. Aldi’s containers sell for 18 cents an ounce. Lidl’s are 22.8 cents.
Pure vanilla extract was another product Aldi beat Lidl on, a more expensive ingredient than sugar and flour. Aldi has two fluid ounces, which sell at $3.25 for Aldi and at Lidl at $3.39.
While it would be difficult to compare all the items in every store, it seems clear that Aldi is more competitive than Lidl for a small number of products.
The difference in locations between Aldi and Lidl is perhaps one of the biggest discrepancies between the two.
Aldi operates over 2,000 stores across the US. These include 37 US states. Batavia, Ill. is the homebase.
Lidl’s expansion in the US was only started in 2017 and now there are 100 of them. They also have a Virginia headquarters.
Aldi operates 10,000 stores in over 100 countries. Lidl has 11,200 stores across 32 different countries, which is a significant advantage.
Aldi may have an advantage in the US but it is easily outnumbered by Lidl stores internationally. Lidl has also increased their expansion. The company aims to have an additional 50 stores operating by the end of 2021.
When shoppers are new to Aldi, they are usually pretty impressed by the quality of the product, and likewise, Aldi fans who try Lidl tend to be pretty blown away by the comparable quality, especially when it comes to the private-label goods.
Some reviewers prefer the Lidl quality to Aldi in some instances, stating that the produce was fresher.
Since people tend to complain that Aldi’s produce section can be hit-or-miss, this comparison is not surprising.
Fresh-baked bread – Lidl has its own bakery on-premise! Fresh-baked simply means freshly baked and sold in-store.
Fewer plastic bags on produce. One shop shopper observed that even though there is bagged produce at Lidl there seemed to be less. Another noticed that Lidl’s produce section seemed to be larger.
Lidl offers bulk nuts! Lidl allows you to buy the exact amount you need. Bakers rejoice! If you’re a serious snacker, however, then you can order in bulk.
International food – Lidl carries a surprising selection of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, like ready-made falafel patties (boxed, too) and bottled tahini, as well as Turkish-style pizza, stuffed cabbage, couscous, and a trio of gelato flavors.
Frozen dinner meals – The one thing Aldi doesn’t carry in the US, that we could wish for above all else, is microwaveable meals (like Marie Calendar or Lean Cuisine). Lidl does carry these, making for a convenient and quick lunch or dinner.

Aldi store music – Even though the stores may be small, it can feel like they’re missing something. One of the ways Aldi keeps costs down is by not paying anyone anything for the rights to play music in the store.
Lidl on the other side is happy to pay for some tunes so that shoppers can hear familiar songs while browsing the aisles.
Lidl has myLidl, an app that allows shoppers to join a club like the Shoppers’ Club. It is available for Android and iOS. In the mobile app, shoppers can play “games”, where they simply have to buy groceries at Lidl.
Shoppers who win a game (by spending certain amounts) get a reward like a coupon to save a set amount on their next trip.
Lidl is different from Aldi because it offers both coupons in general as well as coupons to win monthly games. Aldi only releases coupons once a year.
Shoppers also have the option to purchase groceries using their app. Aldi, in partnership with Instacart, offers mobile grocery ordering.
