Cleveland Launcher Hb-Turbo Driver 2020
New for 2020: The Cleveland Launcher Driver has been designed to strike the ball straighter and higher thanks to an improved cup face.
Cleveland Launcher has a reputation for being synonymous with distance. Numerous versions of the Launcher’s flagship driver have found their way into player bags since pre-400cc drivers. They were made from composite products (Cleveland Comp anyone?). To say that the club changed Cleveland’s metalwood sector is an overstatement.

Launcher, after some time, was finally relaunched in 2012 to great reviews and positive player feedback. Cleveland engineers determined 2020 was the perfect time to revitalize the new Cleveland driver.
Performance And Feel
In our first test, the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo was equipped with the Miyazaki C. Kua shaft. In the testing, our reviewer tested the clubhead model at 9.0 degrees.
This driver is very loud. Because of the thinner face, impact sounds sharp. Although the sound isn’t cheap, players used to hearing muted drivers may need to adjust.
It’s hard to forget the sound of the Launcher HB Turbo, considering the range you can achieve. Our reviewer managed 17 extra yards compared to his counterpart, and spin rates averaged between 2300 and 2600rpm. Although launch was slightly lower than anticipated, it averaged just below 12 degrees. This is likely due to the reviewer’s tendency to catch the ball lower on the face, as more solid drives saw launch increase to above 14 degrees.
Also, forgiveness was very helpful. These shots were taken off the heel and toe, with the distance lost on the shot being well within the middle line.

**ReviewUpdate 10.23.19** I just want to thank Golf WRX & Cleveland, for allowing me to participate. As a senior I’m 76+, with a 14 hcap. The HB Turbo that I got is a 45 inch w/ Phireside, a 10.5*. I am still impressed by this club. It’s a great combo. I love hitting the ball straight. I am finding it tough to hit a controlled draw. Straight. Bad swings are just as bad as any club’s r tocino. So, first of all, thanks to GolfWRX & Cleveland Golf for permitting me to participate! GolfWRX, Cleveland Golf and I are an 18-cap that play 1 or 2 full round per month (more in summer). Although I picked up the game in college, it wasn’t until I was mid-30s that I began to take golf seriously. I’ve never felt fit enough to be a driver. I usually just test out stuff in a shop, get what I need there, or order a shaft/head online that interests me. I am definitely a Titleist guy but after dealing with some driver issues for the last couple outings, having the opportunity to try something else is a blessing in disguise. Let’s get to it!
A Classic 270 or Classic 290 was the last time I had tried out a Cleveland driver. This was a great driver. However, it wasn’t something that I thought I would take up. At the time I was quite happy with my gaming console. The club’s look appealed to me as someone who likes old-school stuff. The Launcher turbo is on the far end, but this one I enjoy. While the matte finish is beautiful, you might find it a bit “busy” from the top. However, once I was at my destination address, I didn’t seem to notice. It is definitely a club I love. Speaking of address, it does appear to sit a little closed.
After getting warmed up at the range I shot about 10 balls with my current and the Cleveland gamers, rotating until I reached my final bucket. I also used a “new” toy to help with testing, an SC100 I picked up used on eBay. The last ball was struck and I saw that my average carry with the gamer was about 256, while the Cleveland’s average carry was just 255. A difference I made was that I was able to convert my minor draws into hooks when my driver was using the Launcher Turbo. This was despite it being either slightly faded or dead straight. Although I attempted to hook Turbo several times, those were more severe draws than I would consider a hook. A Launcher’s ball flight was also noticeably greater.
The Cleveland driver was a challenge to me. I saw that some of my mishits, which were far from the center of my face, were carrying about 240y. However they were still mostly traveling center or right. The first thing I learnt from playing golf was that you should at most try to remove one side. I could definitely see how this would appeal to a high handicap player like myself. It is not something I have the ability to do. Knowing where it is heading even when the ball goes missing is important for me. Further testing will be necessary, but I would love to use it in an actual round.
A very loud ping is my only complaint with an otherwise fantastic product. While it may not be as bothersome as the 915D3 model I owned, this is not something I’d choose to have make a lot of noise every time my driver was in use. It’s a fantastic driver that will help you with your consistency. I will have this in my bag at least for the next few rounds, but early results suggest that it may give my current player a challenge.
