The 588 Altitude driver was created to assist golfers with slower-to-moderate swing speeds. At 270g, it is one of the lightest on the market. You will notice a lower center of gravity and more control thanks to the absence of an adjustable shaft (weighing in at about 10g less), a thin body and face made of 6-4 Titanium and a lighter sole made of BF titan.

Cleveland’s has created a promo video with two average swingers (one bearing strong physical resemblances to Kenny Perry), to reinforce the claim that it isn’t a tour-stick, but a club designed for everyone.

Five88 Altitude drivers are available in three lofts (9, 10.5, and 12 for right-handed golfers; 10 and 10 for lefties). The driver has a 460 cubic-centimeter head. Shaft length is 45.75 inches and lie is 60 degrees. The D3 lofts have a wing weight of 325 g. This unit comes stock with a 50-gram Matrix Radix Sv shaft, and is available for purchase at $300.

[youtube id=”G3NQ3XI1ea4” width=”620” height=”360”] Many lightweight drivers tend feel out of wack in the feel department: the head feels too light or the shaft feels overly flimsy. Cleveland engineers added a pleasant balance to the Altitude. The 588 altitude made me very comfortable. I was able to hit the downswing and contact with the follow-through.

While some golfers can be naturally grip-and–rip, others might have an easier time controlling the ball. With other drivers, I’ve lost a sense of control when upping the velocity. The 588 Altitude was stable through my rapid swings. It gave me a lot of fun blasts.

The driver performed very well even though I couldn’t get my drives to stay solid. The driver tended to curve a bit more than the Cobra AMP Cell Adams Super S and other less forgiving models. But that was likely due to the driver’s low, rearward weighting.

The 588’s moment of inertia (MOI), a measure of a driver’s forgiveness, is an impressive 4700. This results in more face closure and dynamic loft at impact. I felt the extra loft caused the ball to spin more than it needed, and propelling it higher and further sideways. If I could do it again, I’d have asked for a model with a 9 degree angle, but that is up to you, the customer. You’ll get fitted properly like you’re supposed to, right?

Cleveland Golf 588 at Altitude Driver

July 7, 2014 – This driver won’t appear on Golf Digest’s Hot List based on U.S. golfers or Today’s Golfer’s reviews that focus on UK players. But it’s available in Spanish clubs, so MyGolfWay.com considers it worthy of being highlighted. Cleveland Golf designed the new 588 altitude driver specifically for European golfers.

We’ve had it in our hands and have tested it using the Trackman of Swing Lab Barcelona with pro Paul Aitken at Can Cuyas Golf (Barcelona, Spain). This advanced technology is very easy to use, with long straight shots and high flight. Let’s start by looking inside.

Extreme precision is required to determine the weight of 588 Alttitude. Cleveland Golf’s lightweight design and strength have allowed them to shift more weight to lower, deeper areas of their clubheads. It promotes straighter shots as well as a greater moment of inertia. This improves head stability and impact.

Variable thickness is a technology that gives the user a larger sweet spot. You get a fantastic takeoff for center hits. However, you also have great control over off-centre hits.

It is beautiful from an aesthetic perspective. The marks on the face are different, and are there to help square it at impact. Paul Aitken explains this to us, after hitting a number of balls while under the careful eye of Trackman at Swing Lab Barcelona.

“The Trackman has amazing numbers. The face angle shows that it arrived square-on, slanting outwards a little. It has a positive angle of attack, which helps to get the ball up. Head speed is good and the ball travels well. It feels light in the hands and sits nicely on the ground. The grip seems a little thin, but I like how it looks and feels”.

A weight distribution along the back side of the head can be a boon for slower players. The fixed hosel is not customizable, but can save you weight.
