Walmart’s Paid Time Off (PTO) Policy allows eligible employees to take time off work to deal with health issues, family emergencies, or spend time with family. If associates have a balance, PTO may be started at 15 minute intervals. There is no limit to the amount of time that can be used. Walmart may deny PTO, so it’s important to request PTO as quickly as possible.
What Is The Difference Between Regular PTO And Protected PTO At Walmart?
Walmart is committed to helping associates maintain a good work-life balance. They offer both Regular and Protected Paid Time Off (PTO).
Assistants can use regular PTO to plan time off ahead to visit their family and take care of any medical requirements. They also get to relax during the holiday season without having to worry about being paid.
Protected Time Off also covers you in case of a health or family emergency.
In an emergency, you may be worried about how it will impact your job, but Walmart’s Protected Time Off has given associates security in times when they need to suddenly take a few days off without the threat of job loss.

Walmart provides PTO for hourly employees who are full-time or part-time. The rate that PTO can be earned varies depending on the category.
Temporary or seasonal employees may be eligible for PTO but they cannot earn regular PTO.
How does Walmart PTO get calculated?
Walmart accrues PTO hours depending on whether associates are paid hourly, salary or in a position. Also, how long an associate has been working for Walmart.
An example: If an employee worked for Walmart three years, they might earn PTO for 11.8 working hours.
However, employees that have worked 20 years may earn PTO at a rate of 1 hour for every 6.8 hours worked, and a more detailed schedule can be found after logging into the Walmart Employee Portal or reading the Wire.

You may be surprised to learn that associates are able to continue accruing PTO, even if they use their PTO time.

Do I have to work during a holiday in order for my PTO to be available?
Walmart stores are usually open during holidays so associates might be scheduled to work. Associates may have the option to take PTO time if they want to spend their day with family.
However, PTO cannot be used to pay for holiday work.
What is a PTO Plan Year, and How Does It Work?
Walmart PTO year differs from the calendar year. This plan year lasts from February 1st through January 31st the year after.
How do I lose my accrued hours of PTO at the end Of Each Year?
You can carry over up to 80 hours of PTO (for FT Associates) and 48 hours (for PT Associates) at the end of your plan year.
Associates with PTO hours exceeding these numbers will be able to have their balance paid out on February 1st.
Cash-outs are taxable and will be subject to the same tax rules as regular hourly wages.
How Do I Request PTO At Walmart?
If you want to apply for a PTO, please visit the Global Time & Attendance(GTAP) portal.
Managers should be informed immediately by employees that they plan to ask for time off.
This process can be automated so that the GTAP system determines the best type of PTO to suit your needs.
You can take sick leave to use any protected PTO.
Also, because of the unpredictable nature illness, requests for PTO are treated as excused absences. Provided you have enough Protected PTO, the amount you need to cover your time off,
Any reason that associates require PTO (including the time it takes for short term disability to be started) will be treated like Regular PTO.
How Much Consecutive PTO Can Walmart Associates Use?
Associate can request PTO at intervals of 15 minutes.
Currently, the maximum number of days consecutively that an associate may request is unlimited if they have enough time in their PTO.
What Happens If I Need More Time Off?
You are eligible for short-term disability benefits if you’re a Walmart associate who works full time. This will extend your pay time off in the event of a serious medical condition.
You can also apply for an LOA in situations where short-term disability cannot be used, such as with illness to a family member.
Can Walmart Deny PTO?
Walmart employees must ask for PTO in the earliest possible time they notice an absence. The request may be refused if the associate doesn’t have sufficient PTO hours.
When there are not sufficient staff available to cover the requested absence, managers can refuse a PTO application.
Keep in mind that any absence can still be counted as an occurrence according to Walmart’s attendance policy.
