Manila envelopes, also known as tan-yellow mailers, are something you may be familiar with if you have ever received or sent documents.
What Stamps Are Required for Manila Envelopes at USPS 2022
Smaller sizes (e.g. 5 x 7 and 6 x 9) weighing less than 1 ounce only require 1 Forever Stamp, while heavier envelopes require additional ounce stamps in 2022. Larger manila envelopes (e.g. 9 x 12 are flats and cost $1.16 to 1 ounce. Two Forever Stamps will cover this amount.
Can You Mail a Manila Envelope with One Stamp?
Depending on the size and weight of your manila envelope, you may be able to mail it using only one stamp.
For example, smaller manila envelopes, such as those measuring 5 x 7 inches or 6 x 9 inches, meet USPS’ size requirements for First-Class letter mail.
A smaller envelope, such as the one shown here, can only be sent with one stamp as long it weighs under 1 ounce.
A separate note on a related topic: If you need to ensure that your small mailer can be sent using one stamp, make sure they don’t come with string, clasps or medallions.
These items may get stuck in USPS mail sorting machines. Therefore, they are hand-sorted. These items are subject to a $0.30 surcharge, which is currently non-machinable.
This will apply to envelopes with these types of contents. You’ll need special stamps that are not machine-readable (currently $0.88) or pay the difference by using cent stamps.
What are the Stamps I need to make a Manila 5×7 Envelope?
Manila envelopes of 5 x 7 inches are the most common size. These envelopes are therefore compliant with USPS requirements for standard-sized letters.
Mail standard-size letters (including 5×7 manila envelopes) can be sent using the First-Class mail option of USPS.
If your 5 x 7 manila envelope weighs 1 ounce or less, you only need one Forever Stamp to cover postage. Forever Stamps cost only $0.58
Additional postage will be needed if the envelope weighs in excess of 1 ounce.
USPS charges $0.20 for each additional ounce (up to a maximum of 3.5 ounces total). There are two options for purchasing additional ounce stamps: online or at your nearest post office.
USPS will charge you accordingly if your manila envelope is more than 5×7 inches in weight.
How Many Stamps Do I Need for a 6×9 Manila Envelope?
Like the 5×7 envelopes, 6×9 manila envelopes meet USPS standard-size letter requirements.
Therefore, they are also sent via First-Class mail service. For postage purposes, one Forever Stamp suffices as long your envelope weights not more than 1 ounce.
You will need an extra ounce stamp to make sure your envelope is 6×9 and weighs in at least 1.1 ounces or 2 ounces. This cost is $0.20
The same applies to envelopes that weigh between 2.1 ounces or 3.0 ounces. You’ll require 2 additional ounce stamps.
If your 6 x 9 envelope exceeds the 3.5 ounce-maximum for First-Class letter mail, then it will be priced as a large envelope/flat.
What number of stamps do I need for a 9×12 Manila Envelope
This size manila envelope is the most commonly used, as it accommodates standard paper measuring 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
The USPS considers envelopes this large to be flats or large envelopes.
Pricing depends on weight. Below is an estimate of what 9×12 manila envelopes weighing different weights will cost you.
To cover postage for a 1 ounce 9×12 manila envelope, attach 2 Forever Stamps at current rates.
For each additional ounce, you need to add an additional ounce stamp (currently priced at $0.20).
For example, a 2-ounce 9 x 12 manila envelope requires three stamps (2 Forever Stamps and an additional ounce stamp).
For a 3 ounce envelope, you will need four stamps (two Forever Stamps plus two additional ounce stamps).
Are There Any Forever Stamps I Can Use on Manila Envelopes?
Although there are no problems with Forever Stamps being used on manila envelopes it is a good idea to use metered mailage.
Mailing can be ordered at the postoffice or via authorized postage meters, which are leased to small-businesses.
Metered mail looks more professional and will also prevent you over- or underpaying for it. It may also reduce delays in delivery.
