Many companies are starting to recognize the boon in offering tuition assistance to their employees and have begun including them in their benefits packages.
What Is the Walmart College Program?
Walmart recently stated that the Live Better U college degree program was expanding and they are eliminating their $1/day fees.
Now, LBU, in partnership with education assistance management service Guild Education, offers Walmart employees tuition and books at 100 percent remission.
LBU is more than just tuition aid. This program offers high school completion free of charge, college preparation and discounts on additional degrees like masters.
Walmart can also provide full coverage for certificates of professional competence in specialty fields such as business leadership or optometry.
Access to skills and language training is also possible for employees. This allows them to be multifaceted in today’s workforce.
And finally, students will receive free education coaching from Guild, to help them navigate the program, choose the right degree or skills and just generally offer learning support.

These schools offer either an entirely online option or a traditional brick-and–mortar education with a strong remote/online program.
No matter what the situation, these programs were created to be accessible to both adult learners as well as full-time employees.
These online programs, if they are any like the ones I’ve attended, don’t necessarily require that students “attend class” at certain times or attend lectures.
Instead all information including videos and slideshows are made available online. Students can access them on their own time, completely at their own convenience.
Then, it’s on them to manage their time and ensure that they complete assignments by the due dates.
The discussion boards are an excellent way for students to get in touch with one another. These online programs are quite immersive and can make it easy to be social. You can also arrange for offsite interaction via texting or email.
Finally, attending online school can be intimidating, but professors and counselors are there for their students, even from thousands of miles away.
Online schools make a point of being especially supportive to their students, because they know the physical barriers of time and space can be difficult to overcome.
How Much Is The Walmart College Program?
Walmart offers a college program via LBU that is totally free. Walmart also covers 100% of tuition and books expenses.
Online programs mean that students do not have to worry too much about their on-campus housing or travel expenses.
Before the new system was implemented, all employees would have to pay $1 per person, an extremely low tuition fee.
Even a couple hundred dollars per year could cause undue financial hardship for families and be a barrier to higher education.
Good on Walmart for recognizing that and removing all financial barriers to their employees.

Are There Any Restrictions and Exclusions With The Walmart College Program?
Walmart’s college program has its limitations and exclusions.
This program can lead to degrees in business, supply chain management, and technology, among others.
Walmart won’t pay you for the poetry degree that you have always desired.
Employees without bachelor’s or associate degrees cannot use the program. You can’t get an associate or bachelor’s degree through the program.
It is not possible to hire temporary associates for holiday work.
And finally, most salaried employees are not eligible. The exception is field facility associates who are salaried; they are still eligible for the program.
What Walmart College Program Scholarships are available?
Walmart does not offer scholarships for students enrolled in its LBU college program. This is because the entire cost of tuition and expenses will be covered by Walmart.
Walmart had offered scholarships that weren’t tied to LBU over the years.
Those were the Walmart Associate and Walmart Dependent scholarships, which applied to their employees and children or dependents of their employees.
Up to $13,000 was available for the scholarship to go towards a four year degree program.
Walmart has ended its scholarship program because of expansion plans for the LBU Program.
They opted instead to concentrate their education assistance on Live Better U.
LBU is only available to current employees. This means that Walmart employee dependents cannot receive tuition aid from Walmart.
However, employees who are enrolled in college through the Walmart Associate scholarship or Walmart Dependent scholarship will be eligible to receive full funding.
Walmart College: What Does It Cost?
Walmart is covering 100% of tuition costs and books for employees in this bold program. This will be a significant expense.
This mega-retailer even announced that they were investing nearly $1 billion in employees to help cover these costs.
Over a million U.S. workers are eligible for the program.
It’s crucial to maintain perspective.
One billion dollars is nothing to blink at, but Walmart reported revenue topping $500 billion for two years in a row.
Walmart is the only company that can afford education for its workers.
