From 2015 to March 2021 one relatable show got big laughs: Superstore, a 30-minute comedy that followed the lives and antics of a group of employees in a big box discount store.

  • Cloud 9 #1217 was the store’s nickname. The character made it relatable and a true personality. That was because people compared it to their Walmart. Superstore can be compared to Walmart. Learn more below.
  • Is Superstore Based On Walmart? (Is Cloud 9 Real + More)

    Walmart is Superstore.

Although Cloud 9 is a hypermarket that appears in Superstore has many similarities with Walmart’s real-life chain, none of the actors have ever claimed officially that Walmart was the location. Cloud 9 includes elements from Target and Walmart, while Target is referred to as a competitor.

  • To learn more about Cloud 9, where Superstore is filmed and whether any of the creatives working on Superstore actually worked in a real superstore, check out all the information I’ve compiled for you!
  • Is Cloud 9 Real?

Cloud 9 is a fictional retailer chain. It’s fictional but it does bear many similarities to the real-life big-box stores.

Cloud 9 corporate, according to Superstore Wiki Page, is based out of Chicago. However they have locations throughout the world.

The company’s fictional employment policies leave much to be desired. Employees do not get paid for maternity leave, overtime, and health insurance.

Cloud 9 employees can only go to the bathroom once per shift and they only receive 15 minutes for lunch.

Similar to real corporate offices, the main office controls all locks, music and temperature for each store.

Cloud 9 shares a similar store brand to Walmart’s Great Value. At first, the name was Halo. But, later, it changed to SuperCloud.

    Superstore: A parody of Walmart

  • Oxford Languages defines “parody” as “an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.”
  • Superstore can be described as a parody on the Walmart experience if Oxford Languages is taken at its word.

Superstore is likely to be outdone by the Walmart real Walmart in the exaggeration department.

Look at these real-life stories from Walmart employees about some of the craziness they have witnessed.

Sometimes the real world is just as amazing as fiction.

Walmart Superstore: Was the Writer of Superstore a Walmart Employee?

It doesn’t seem that Walmart writers and producers were actually employed by them, but they did work with OUR Walmart.

OUR Walmart now known as United4Respect is a non-profit labor advocacy group that promotes equality and fairness for workers at companies such as Walmart and Amazon.

Composed of both former and current employees, it’s no wonder OUR Walmart/United4Respect was able to help the creators at Superstore portray ultra-realistic scenarios.

Does Superstore have a real store?

  • Superstore did not film in an actual Walmart. The first episodes were shot inside a K-Mart.
  • According to Showbiz Cheatsheet, the actors were even mistaken for employees and got asked many times where certain items were.

Producing the second season had been a success. Filming took place at Universal Studios, California. It was on a three-story soundstage.

Walmart Supercenter occupies an average of 182,000 feet. The set design was obviously not that huge.

So to create the impression of such a massive building, the crew sets up in about 22,000 square feet with mirrors. It makes the store seem longer.

Items like the checkout registers and scanners are actually real, repurposed from old Ralph’s and Fresh & Easy stores.

    Superstore: Are the Products Real?

Watch Superstore for any amount of time, and you will see many recognizable brands.

Superstore signed clearance deals with these brands (e.g. Keurig) enabling them to list their names on the screen.

Quora members speculate that Superstore paid brands to be placed in the products.

Cloud 9 has a great selection of store-brand items that make the set feel even more personal.

Cloud 9 is a familiar, if not frighteningly familiar, store compared with the Walmart stores our family visits.

You can find out more information about Walmart by checking if Walmart is a part of Wayfair and whether Walmart offers a tax-exempt plan. Also, check if Walmart accepts VSP and EyeMed.

  • Conclusion
  • Cloud 9 and its employees on Superstore certainly feel like a direct take on Walmart, but none of the creators have made an official comment stating that this is so.

That’s smart, I think, because Superstore speaks about the common experience of every retail worker, regardless of whether they’re at Walmart, Target, or any other department store.
