A metal detectorist by trade, I believe it is crucial to be fully informed when purchasing a detector. This is especially true if you are just starting out in the hobby. You need to be aware of many aspects when selecting the metal detector that is best for you. What’s your budget first? What budget are you willing to invest? Though beginner detectors may be among the least expensive detectors available, this doesn’t mean they won’t have value. It’s fine to begin with a cheap detector. In fact, there are a few reasons why I would recommend this. The detectors I’m about to go over are all under $500 and tend to be easier to learn how to use. They are meant to give you a taste of metal detecting. The best rule of thumb to avoid spending hundreds of thousands on metal detectors is not to know exactly what you want or feel confident within the world of treasure hunter.

It’s important to research the different brands available. – It’s like buying a car. Do you prefer Toyota, Ford, Dodge or Chevy? The following will help you decide which detector is best for you.

You should decide which type of treasure-hunting you prefer. Is it you who wants to visit the beaches? Perhaps you want to detect parks, looking for rings or jewelry left behind by others before you. Another option is to search for treasures under the sea, such as old mine claims or ghost towns. I’m going to list some categories for research.

It can seem daunting to choose the right metal detector when you first start in metal detecting. Although metal detectors can be different in their performance, they all perform the same basic functions.

There is no need to spend a fortune when you start. In fact, there are instances where we discourage such purchases. Finding the best entry-level metal detector is quite simple.

Pick out a well-rounded metal detector with good performance, practice with it, and once you have decided you need an upgrade, sell it and get an upgrade!

This is what you need to remember: Metal detectors as well as golf clubs can find and hit metal balls. To find metal you don’t necessarily need to own a top-of-the-line detector. You also don’t have to use a fancy club for hitting a golf ball.

Garrett Ace 300

Garrett ACE 400 – and multifrequency Garrett ACE Apex. Garrett ACE 300 is a great beginner metal detector.

The 8 kHz frequency operating frequency, which is the most versatile and useful for beginners in metal detection, serves as a good starting point.

We like the 8 kHz operating frequency because it provides us with excellent sensitivity and excellent detection depth for general, all-purpose detecting scenarios.

A number of important features will appeal to beginners thanks to the LCD display on Garrett ACE 300 controller box. First, there are five different preset search modes you can use to metal detect with.

Each discriminates one type of metal. The search modes are very easy and don’t require you to change the settings.

You can also use the digital target identification display to determine what metals you may be mining before you start searching. You will be able to tell if a target’s worth the effort.

The ACE 300 comes with a depth indicator to show you where the target is located in relation to the ground.

One problem I’ve encountered while metal detecting is not being able to stay out all day when using heavy metal detectors, as it can cause some serious fatigue. With the Garrett ACE 300, it is not an issue, as the detector only weighs 2.8 pounds.

This budget metal detector is built with an ergonomic design that maximizes user comfort. The handle’s armpad and handle are made of foam that I love.

Finally, the selection of ACE series search coils available is what sets the Garrett ACE 300 apart from other starter metal detectors. Small search coils are available that can be used in areas with high trash or where you don’t have the clearance to swing your detector.

Most affordable metal detector for beginners (2021): Detectors with great value

If you’re looking for a way to get started with metal detecting without spending a lot on expensive equipment, these five beginner detectors are the best choice. The following five beginners metal detectors are a good choice for those who want to try metal detecting but don’t have the budget.

The Quick Select…

Fisher F22 is my favourite beginner’s detector. The lightweight detector is easy to use, but has lots of advanced features. My favorite choice for serious metal detectors without the need to invest a fortune is this.

If you look in any outdoor department store, there are many metal detectors that can be found. These models are aimed either at adults or beginners. You can find these models at a very low price and are readily available.

The problem is that these detectors are effectively just toys. It’s very unlikely that you will receive any signal, unless there is an object on the floor. And even when you hit a target, it’s likely to be junk such as a pull tab.

Fortunately, there are some excellent models that provide professional-standard performance for a much lower cost than premium models.

Even though beginner detectors may lack the most advanced settings or features, some of the top options offer features like depth indicators, visual target ID and notch discrimination. They can also detect jewelry, coins and other relics up to 6-8 inches depending on ground conditions.

To help you get started in this addictive hobby, I’ve put together a list of my five top picks for beginners. But before I get any more into it, let me tell you what to look out for when looking for a beginner metal detector.

Key Features and Terminology

Minelab X-Terra 305

Minelab are well known for making premium metal detectors, which can run into the thousands. Many people are unaware that the company produces an entry-level model, the Ex-TERRA 305.

VLF detector, the 305, is for those who are just starting out or on a tight budget. Even though it doesn’t offer the same level of technology as Minelab’s most expensive models, the 305 can be used to detect first-timers.

What makes this better than the F22?

The 305 comes with a range of interesting features, including Minelab’s VFLEX technology. This allows the machine to change between 7.75kHz & 18.75kHz frequency using a single coil.

The 305 does an adequate job of iron discrimination, as you’d expect from a Minelab detector.

It also has manual ground balance adjustment. This ability is quite rare among beginner detectors. Therefore, the X-TERRA 305 would be a wonderful choice if there are high levels of mineralization. Additional features include two pre-set search modes, an all-metal mode with three tone IDs and threshold adjustment, as well as a noise cancelling function.

However, there are downsides. The stock coil isn’t the best we’ve seen, so you’ll probably want to upgrade it relatively quickly. It’s also a bit pricier than the cheapest beginner metal detectors.

You should still consider it if the machine you are looking for has more features than your “first detector”.

Bounty hunt Tk4 tracker metal detector review

Bounty Hunter TK4 (great brand!) It’s the perfect metal detector for beginners.

It has an 8″ concentric coil that’s waterproof and fully submersible, but the control box is not. Be on the lookout for bigger waves.

There are 3 search modes available on the Bounty Hunter: All-metal, Tone Discrimination, and Full Discrimination. Because they don’t require much explanation, technophobes are likely to quickly grasp them. This is because of the prized autotrac balance.

These modes can be toggled. Pick the one you like and go. All metal will obviously detect everything, full discrimination will ignore low-value targets like iron, and tone discrimination will emit a different tone for each find.

Out of all of my recommendations, I find this one easiest to hold and swing. I like its ergonomic design and many reviewers agree. The fact that it doesn’t weigh the most is a mystery to me, however it does seem well-balanced.

Turn the adjustable sensitivity down if you are looking for treasure and not trash. To alert to all things, turn it up. Sometimes the detector can even detect minerals in the soil.

A good trick is to hold the detector over an item you want to find, maybe a coin for example, and see how far you can turn it down before the detector doesn’t register.

Also, the ground-balance – This is a huge bonus for an entry level model.

Automatic ground balance sets the Bounty Hunter to your soil conditions and figures out whether it’s highly mineralized or not.

This great feature will make your life easier and save you time. Ground balance is a great feature that will save you time and aggravation. Ground balance means your machine will behave.

Garrett Ace 300 Metal Detector Review

Garret Ace 300, a top-rated metal detector for beginners, is highly recommended.

The device is very simple and easy to use.

It has a large 7 x 10-inch search coil for better depth and discrimination and runs on an 8kHz frequency that you can adjust. The 8 kHz frequency means that you will find almost everything, but the kHz frequency can pick up objects with higher conductivity like gold.

It is also submersible, which makes it very useful for searching freshwater for any jewelry that has been lost.

Do you know what search term to use? You can simply switch between the search mode you are interested in. There are five search modes to choose from: Jewelry, custom, coins, or no discrimination.

Modes work by turning off sections of the Target ID scaling. While other targets may still be visible on the digital readingout, the audio will not alert you.

To make it even more interesting, audio IDs can be used to identify the tone of the sound, which allows you to see exactly what you are looking for without digging.

A digital target ID function can be very handy, and is not usually available in beginner models. Target ID will provide you with a numerical scale from 0-99. Target ID will provide you with a numerical scale from 0-99. High frequency metals, such as gold, register high readings. Low frequency metals, like iron fall lower.

This allows you to identify the valuable stuff and not just junk and tin foil.

The depth indicator will show you how deep you have to go before you dig. This handy tool makes metal-detecting much more fun.
