Performance

First thing I noticed about the TS4 driver was Titleist’s lack of SureFit CG Weight. Instead, the TS4 weighs in a similar manner to the TS2, except that it is much closer to the face. Titleist has moved the CG forward to make the TS4 less spinny, but at the cost of forgiveness.

I had the opportunity to test the TS3 and TS4 head-to-head and the difference in forgiveness was immediately noticeable both in the way the club felt and in the numbers. While the TS3 seems to be stable when it comes to mishits the TS4 twists significantly on a bad strike. You will notice a dramatic drop in both ball speed as well as distance.

One thing that I found particularly interesting was that there was very little spin between the TS3 & TS4 versions. The usual caveat I make is that I tend to be a low spin player and this may not apply to you. If you are trying to decrease spin, however, I would think hard about what the tradeoff is between forgiveness and spin.

NOTE: Please do not go to the TS3 review to compare launch monitor numbers. That was over 8 months ago with a different shaft and a different loft. Launch monitor numbers from different reviews should never be compared apples to apples.

The TS4 driver allows for optimal shot shaping for high-level ball strikers. While I didn’t see it all, there was more curvature with the TS4 drives than normal. The TS4 can be used to fling the ball about like Bubba.

Titleist Ts4 Driver Review, Photos And More: Clubtest 2020

ClubTest 2020 saw us test and review 28 drivers in order to help you choose the best one. The Titleist TS4 driver’s results are below.

Price: $499 / BUY NOW. Lofts available in 8.5@, 9.5@, 10.5@. We think the TS4 has it all. It’s about spinning and dialing into launch. A relocated SureFit weight allows for 300 to 400 rpm to be achieved when compared with the TS3. Although the 430cc engine’s profile is more compact that many drivers today, it’s not by accident. Aerodynamic shapes help build speed and speed, which is good for swing speed players. They don’t need to have trouble finding the VFT (Variable Face Thickness), center on a daily basis. As you’d expect, the driver has a massive following among the professional ranks.

With a carry distance that was seven yards longer than the average for all drivers tested, it’s safe to say the TS4 put on a show during robot testing in South Korea. It received similar high marks during player testing from low handicappers particularly those with faster swings who previously had difficulty shedding unwanted spin.

ClubTester 2-hdcp take: “I really like the small, traditional profile.” Robot’s take on mishits: “Mishits can be magnified, but once you hit one of the screws it goes.” Robots take on Robots Take-off: Very high carry values, which is great for those with high swing speed. Also, one of the best at promoting low spin characteristics.

Review: Titleist Ts4 Driver A Modern Day Classic

By Brian Sommer, PH.D The golf industry is not short on marketing jargon as in the past decade the industry manufactures have released golf clubs with different driver head shapes, sizes, color schemes intended to help with alignment, shallower and deeper faces, face milling, internal weights, external adjustable weights, tracks and adjustability options for different face angles, lie angles, and lofts. Trackman, and other data-analyzing software is becoming more important to the golf industry to allow players to work with club fitters in order to dial in the optimal launch conditions. The 2019 word for speed is irons, fairway woods and golf balls. Manufacturers are touting clubs that provide more speed for the golfers, resulting in greater distance. Titliest’s company has started to get into speed. Titleist products, which are popular with lower handicaps and professional golfers, have now launched a new series, or metal woods. Titleist has already released four new drivers for 2019 in addition to their regular two-year product release and development timeline. The TS 2 and T3 had 460cc heads earlier this year. They were followed by the TS1 & TS4 a few more months later. With the TS4 at 430cc, it was the TS4. The number of clubs that Titliest released in 2019 is a significant departure. Also, the name of the new metal wood line is a major change. This is perhaps the first major change for Titliest. Titleist stands as Titleist. S is for speed. Titlest says it wants to keep its relevance in the driver market. Titlest has created and launched a driver which boasts greater “speed”. What is the truth? C.O.R. can be found in an industry that has been so closely regulated by R&A (the USGA) and R&A (which have implemented it). The regulations are for drivers which limit the effects of spring like or trampoline on the face to 0.83

Titleist’s new 2019 drivers feature the SureFit Hosel, which allows the user to adjust the club’s loft and lie to best suit their golf swing. The TS1 is a lightweight version of the other three drivers specifically targeted to golfers with slower swing speeds weighing in at a paltry 275grams, compared to the TS 2, 3 and 4 which are heavier. The TS2 replaces the old 917 D2 driver, which has the highest MOI, or moment of inertia theoretically reducing twisting at impact resulting in straighter shots. The new TS3 replaces the 917 D3. It has greater adjustability and a more direct ball flight. Golfers have more shots shaping options. Justin Thomas and Adam Scott have used the TS3 for their drives.

Acushnet has a rebuttal for TaylorMade’s m5 tour driver driver. Each head is a 430cc in size and they are both marketed to be low-spin alternatives to TaylorMade’s larger 460cc driver heads. Titleist has reported that the TS4 can reduce a golfer’s spin rate by 300-400rpms, which could be significant for some golfers.

There are two things that I am very sensitive about when it comes to golf clubs, sound, feel. These two elements are crucial in golf club performance. Any frequency or feel changes could lead to golf swing manipulations to achieve the right sound and feel. In the last 7-8 years, I was disappointed in the sound and feel of all the available golfer’s driver options. As a result, I was uncertain and nervous when I upgraded from my TourStage TourStageX-drive driver. It was released in 2008. Many of my fears were confirmed by the time I started testing out newer drivers. Callaway was the latest driver I tested. All of the drivers I met were equipped with Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec 7x. Each Titiest driver was set to SureFit hosel Setting B-1 to ensure consistency. I narrowed down my choices to the Titliest after testing many heads and configurations. I have used the 917 D3, TS2, and TS3 drivers. They were good, but I found each of them to be loud, (resembling an aluminum bat) hollow feeling and lacked head weight, compared to the TourStage/Bridgestone driver that I have used for more than a decade, which has a much softer face and more muted sound comparable to a wooden bat crack. Final decision was made to go with the latest Titleist Driver. You can read my review of it here.

Look at the TS4’s look. As a long-time golf enthusiast and a former player, I have never found the right driver. I was excited to look and test the TS4, the 430cc head is very nice, it reminds me of the old traditional golf clubs that weren’t too bulbous. The TS4 appears very similar to the TS1, 2 or 3 drivers. But it is smaller and has a rounder shape than larger models. The TS4 is my favorite driver on today’s market. This driver has the potential to take on my former gamer in terms of looks.

Sound/Feel The sound and feel of the TS4 is a departure from other TS drivers and virtually all other drivers that have been released in the past couple of years. Due to the emphasis on speed and the changing industry, new drivers have lighter, thinner faces. The result is the hollow sound and hollow feel. According to my experiences, this does not make for a smooth transition. Since sound is so important to me, as a player, it can cause me loss of feeling through the swing. The sound and feel at impact are confusing. It is not uncommon for me to hit solid drives, which travel very short distances. However, poorly-struck shots often fly much further than anticipated. Since the ball won’t remain on the club face very long it is harder to discern solid contact. The old forged drivers are what I miss most. However, the TS4 has challenged the notion, that golf equipment was better when…the TS4 driver is the closest driver to mimicking the sound and feel of the older forged face of my TourStage/Bridgestone. This may be due to the small club heads and internal CG. Due to the smaller head, it is not possible for the face to be thinned quite as often. Additionally, the CG lies closer to face which results in a more natural sound and feel.

Performance. I’ve been using the TS4 about 2 months. The TS4 is not significantly faster than my last driver. The TS4, has a low, penetrating ball flight, that does not balloon, the trajectory resembles the old-style drivers which flew lower. The 2019 approach, where drivers can fly higher but spin less, is quite different. While this is not the modern approach, it was possible to see the center of a face easier with the smaller head. However, when I tested the larger 460cc heads, it was more difficult to locate the center of the face. The faces are too stretched and the heads are so big that, although off-center hits can have performance advantages, it was still hard to find the center. In my view, the smaller heads have less surface to hit the ball. This results in more hits being made in the middle of the face. It also makes for better shots dispersion and solid contact. I realized that my swing was more fluid and that the ball was flying at my target. It is the most responsive new driver that I’ve ever used. The TS4 makes a fantastic choice for players that are searching for a contemporary classic. They have traditional sounds, looks and feel and will appeal to modern-day drivers.
