When you first see the TaylorMade R1 driver you are probably going to do a double take. Some may find the crown distracting, but it is best to forget this and go for the R1 driver.
The R1 is more accommodating than the R11s. All low to mid-handicappers will appreciate the 460cc head’s wide, generous face. The aerodynamics of have been improved through the use of a thick/thin crown and it seems to make the R1 driver feel a bit more lively than the R11s.
It’s not even the R12. TaylorMade believes that R1 provides a greater range of customizable options. Twelve loft options are available, including two upright and eight-to-12 degree settings. There will be only one model, and you can change it to fit your needs.
You can also change the loft by changing its face angle. If you are unhappy with the position at the address, you can use the sole plate to make adjustments. This feature is on the sole and most noticeable. It offers seven positions with a range from plus or minus three degrees. This version looks better and has a more visible effect.
TaylorMade has the solution to the adjustable face angle problem. This club has 2 points of contact with ground under its face, and 1 plate. In our previous reviews we mentioned that we do not understand the adjustment. Because the lie and loft have been locked together, changing the angle at the address will not effect this. The only problem is that the face angle will not change if you go to the lowest or most loft settings.
The sole also has a 1 and 13 gram weights. This allows you to tweak the weight distribution in order to get the right shape for your R1 driver. They are slightly higher on the R1’s sole than previously, in order to reduce spin and lower the centre gravity.
TaylorMade research found that 82% of golfers have the wrong loft. 35% are off by over 2 degrees. It is important to do some custom fitting to ensure the best setting. TaylorMade also promises a phone support line for tuning professionals to assist you. The headcover will include a dial so that you can save your settings.

TaylorMade has been doing a great job in recent years creating buzz about their latest line of driver models. TaylorMade has such a huge presence on the PGA Tour and they take pride in their stable of players using and promoting their latest equipment. TaylorMade’s release of their R1 driver is exciting, due to how customizable the driver allows the golfer or the club fitter.
TaylorMade introduced the R1 to golfers by stating that it was their most flexible driver. With a single tool, a golfer is able to alter the loft, shot shape, and face angle of their driver. If a player changes his swing, they don’t need to replace their driver. Instead they can adjust the R1 according.
Staff at the local pro shop were very happy to only have to carry one driver, adjust it for the player, and no longer need four or five to switch between when the fit process begins. This review was done using a R1 and a Stiff Aldila Phenom shaft.
Let’s examine how the club performed.
TaylorMade designed a huge amount of technology for the R1 Driver, like every TaylorMade club. A driver can change the loft with the R1 Driver. This is the most notable piece of technology. The R1 was the first technology that allowed golfers to adjust the loft by one degree. With the R1, the golfer can now go from eight degrees to twelve with a single club. This technology is found in TaylorMade’s hosel design. With the Loft Sleeve, there are 7 standard lofts as well as 5 upright options. You can have 12 positions with this loft. TaylorMade advertises that almost 80% golfers have the wrong loft. Although this could prove difficult, I was pleasantly surprised by the driver’s flexibility.
R1 is the next generation of technology that allows you to choose from seven different angles. This ability to adjust the face angle of the R1 is not new. A golfer can change it with either the R11 or R11S. But, these options are not as numerous as they are now. With the same wrench that one uses to change the loft the golfer now has the capability to change the face using the face angle sole plate. With the new face angle soleplate, you can set your clubhead to any position at address: open, neutral or medium open. TaylorMade says the sole plate has a new design to improve wearability and visibility. I will discuss some changes in the esthetics area.
Distance
Although R1 is an explosive distance, it is mostly due to driver fit rather than longevity.
This allows an individual to improve the carry distance using R1. A standard loft and neutral face settings of 10.5 degrees will produce an additional distance of around +12.7 yards. Experienced players can stretch the yardage gain to up to +20 after tweaking the loft, heel/toe, face angle weights.

Off-center shots will give you incredible spin speeds with almost all drivers. Unfortunately the R1 doesn’t do this. When playing in the fairway, keep the ball at close contact. Sometimes, R1 can produce off-center shots that are unpredictable or off-target. This is especially true at range sessions. You will get better results with a miss slightly higher on the face compared to lower on the face. TaylorMade R1 reviews are more flexible.
Verdict
A great performance. Very professional. The orange and black is also visually appealing, and most importantly, it was long and straight. I can promise you, there is a setting within the R1 that will suit every type of golfer.

Taylormade R1 Driver sports engineered for adjust-ability and pure distance, it is already a worldwide success with four Tour victories. This includes two PGA Tour victories.
Taylormade asserts that about 80% golfers just don’t play right. This means that golfers are not getting the most from their driver. This year they’ve set out to fix that with the R1 and its patented loft sleeve. Which allows golfers to choose the loft (between 8 and 12 degrees) that best fits their game. They’ve kept the best of what worked, while introducing new features. You can adjust the sole plate to alter your face angle and weight your toe/heel. Only a few short days ago, the Taylormade R1 Driver was officially released. We had an opportunity to evaluate and review the driver on our own terms. It meant hours spent at the range with dozens upon dozens of balls. An exciting challenge which we were ready to conquer!
– TaylorMade R1 Review – (9 out of 10) The R1 begs to be gripped n’ ripped straight out of the box. It is light-weight and very well balanced, according to our tests. Actually, it feels very much like the R11 and R11S. Because it is so stable at the address, and gives off a wonderful “thawk” sound at impact when your partners are gone, this driver feels very similar to the R11 and R11S from 2012. Seriously, this driver is loud, and we loved it!

If Taylormade’s all-white driver’s head was too “out there”, you might be looking at the R1 design and thinking “how is it not distracting?” After first seeing the R1, we asked the exact same question. Attractive, yes… conventional, no. Not by a long shot! After some good time on the range we started to appreciate the R1’s race-inspired finish. The large, white triangle shape was helpful in alignment. We can’t say this aggressive design is for everyone, but by the end of testing we came to love the R1’s unique design and graphics. It’s one of most attractive designs that you will see on the course.
Taylormade trademarks are found on the underside of R1, including two movable weights (1 gram or 10 grams) at the heel and toe. There is also an adjustable soleplate for easy face angle changes. Also, you can use the loft sleeve to select your loft. This is quite remarkable from an engineering perspective (more details later), however, it has not been noticed at address. As it should.
Although they may appear illusory or unnecessary, when used together, these parts can greatly improve accuracy and distance.

TaylorMade R drivers have been a big hit with pros for years and are well-respected.
R15 comes with 2 solely slide weights of 12.5 grams. This will allow you to adjust your draw and fade preferences while increasing overall effectiveness.
The slide channel is 12mm ahead of the face. This means that your launch will be higher and you’ll have less spin. Due to being close to the mouth, the channel allows you to launch faster and with more forgiveness.
