Performance

In reading up on the ZX7 driver before testing, I noted the emphasis on “penetrating” (read: “low”) launch and low spin, plus the focus on “Tour shaping.” This set my expectations for the forgiveness rather low. Surprised, I found that ball speed was maintained even when there were poor swings due to the combination between the carbon crown and rebound frame.

Srixon spoke of the low launch speed and spin in its product description. The first swing was clear. You should make the ZX7 your top choice for 2021 if you are looking to cut down on your tee shots, or launch more potent drives. If you’re looking for a higher launch angle, or a little more spin, then the ZX5 driver might be a better option. [review here] The Srixon ZX7 driver ships stock with Project X HZRDUS smoke black [review hier]. This shaft works well for fast, aggressive swingers and accents the ZX7’s lower spin, lower launching tendencies.

Finally, ZX7’s driver can be adjusted in two simple ways. The hosel allows you to adjust loft, lie angle and face angle. Weight ports are located in the heel as well as toe. Stock configurations have an 8 gram load in the toe, and a four gram in the heel. This creates a neutral shot. Flip them for a draw. Srixon has additional weights available at $15 per weight. The stock setting worked well for me. However, additional weights can be purchased at Srixon’s website, which costs $15 per weight.

ZX5 is 10.5@ at 9.5@ and ZX7 at 9.5@. ZX7 has 9.5@. ZX5 is 10.5@. ZX7’s: 9.5@. 10.5@. ZX5’s take: ZX5 packs an extra punch with added forgiveness and distance. One user commented: “The traditional styling and the red line down the back look amazing. The ball hits the target very quickly. It’s the best driver I’ve hit today.” Speaking of hits, the two models offer golfers a choice between a higher trajectory with the ZX5 or a more penetrating flight courtesy the ZX7.

OUR VIEW: ZX Drivers ZX5 and ZX7 both deliver extra distance and forgiveness. One test participant commented that the traditional shape and red lines on the back looked great. The ball is very fast and feels good on the face. This is the best shot I have made all day. TECHNOLOGY DETAILS. The Rebound Frame and carbon crown increase forgiveness and distance on off-center hits. An adjustable hosel with two back and low weight ports allows golfers to control the CG and face angles for a fade or draw shot. The more triangular ZX5 has a higher MOI and produces a higher ballflight, whereas the rounder ZX7 yields affords more shotmaking playability and produces a more penetrating launch. Additionally, an adjustable hosel and two rear and low weight ports enable golfers to fine-tune the CG placement and face angle for a draw or fade shot shape. The ZX5 is triangular and has a lower MOI. It also produces more ballflight. However, the ZX7’s rounder shape allows for more shotmaking and provides a flatter launch.

Overall Impressions

My game showed that the Srixon ZX5 driver was the best of both new options. I had previously played as the Z785 player for the past year and was hoping to be able to resume the ZX7-style driver profile. You should try several options before you make a decision.
