Sound & Feel

My review of SIM2’s driver will show you that I love its feel. I was worried about getting the SIM2 Max. It is often that the driver who plays the most feels better than the one who’s more patient. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the SIM2 Max driver has the same exceptional feel as the SIM2.

Striking a golf ball with the SIM2 Max feels incredibly solid and produces a mid-pitch “crack.” The sound is good, but it’s the feel that makes this club so much fun to hit.

The SIM2 Max driver provides excellent feedback though, despite being forgiving. It’s easy to spot where the ball touches the face, if one pays attention. One small, surprising difference between the SIM2 Max and the SIM2 is that I found more audio feedback in the SIM2 Max.

Performance

It is clear to see the SIM2 Max by looking at TaylorMade’s light on SIM2 drivers. It leverages all the same tech as the SIM2 – Speed Injected Twist Face, Forged Ring Construction, SIM Inertia Generator – and both are the maximum allowable 460 cc. SIM2 Max, on the other hand, is labeled as “Mid Launch” and “Highest forgiveness”.

I’d like to tell you that I uncovered something dramatically different in my testing, but I didn’t. The SIM2 Max driver is exactly what TaylorMade claims: a more forgiving, higher launching version of the SIM2 (number lovers rejoice, you can compare the LM numbers in this review apples-to-apples with those in the SIM2).

Both the SIM2 and SIM3 changes have been beneficial to my game. The increased forgiveness resulted in a modest increase in the average ball velocity. A slightly lower launch angle and spin added some distance to my average carry distance. While the difference was not large, they may have grown over time with larger samples. It is worth noting that I play a very low level of spin, which may explain why you might see greater spin differences among the SIM2 driver head.

Forgiveness

This is a clear indication that SIM2 Max offers more flexibility than SIM2. This was evident in my tests.

Furthermore, all my mishits performed better with SIM2 Max. Their distance results were more similar to solid strike and the majority of mishits stayed in the fairway.

However, how does the forgiveness compare to SIM Max? Some people say there is no improvement, but I strongly disagree.

In my SIM Max review, I noted that the driver didn’t seem much more forgiving than the . TaylorMade certainly has closed that gap with their SIM2 Max. In a nutshell I believe this driver is the most forgiving you have right now.

Posted It’s been a while since we’ve had an “official” TMag review of any sort. We hope that this will soon change.

This is an unofficial overview of SIM2 max.

First a bit about me. A 64-year old Lutheran Minister in a small church and school near St Petersburg, FL. Penny is 19 years old and disabled from Cerebralpalsy. My wife and i are parents to her. This is a long story, but it doesn’t mean I have a lot to do with golf. At 5.6 my handicap index, and at 90-90 the driver’s swing speed. I have 7 iron 140, and driver 220-220.

My club hosted a Taylor Made fit experience. Full bag, full irons, and woods were all options. It’s been awhile since I tried to find a 3 Wood. While it seems unlikely that one will fit my medium SS or shallow AoA, I am willing to search if it exists. I was willing to fit a wood sander for half an hour at 10 o’clock in the morning.

The time mattered because I always play late in the day and am much faster then. After arriving early at the club, I warmed up and managed to beat my usual speed according the Rapsodo by 3mph. Trackman the Trackman will have my SS running at less than 1 mph on my small $450 unit.

i started out hitting some 3 woods – was carrying them around 180, running out to 195. Then I pulled out the 5 Wood and struck it three more times.

At 17.5 it is a four-wood and I fit perfectly. My average carry was 192 and my runout was 205. He cried, but said that he was happy to try driver.
