In Search Of The Perfect Pencil Point

Mary Norris Two things I spotted at the recent pencil party I attended made me drool: a Palomino long-point handheld pencil sharpener (I had not known that a handheld pencil sharpener could be anything but a toy; I have one in the shape of the Empire State Building that I treasure for sentimental reasons, but it is useless except as a cake decoration) and a state-of-the-art wall-mounted X-Acto sharpener that was featured in the Sharpening Lounge (it not only delivers a beautiful point but does so in reverent silence). You can find three items in this: the Sharpening Lounge had copies of David Rees’ pencil-yellow manual “How to Sharpen Pencils,” which is a very good book. This was one of few that I found worthy of being in the “Humor/Reference” category. Also, I did not realize until David Rees that I relied heavily on an electric pencil-sharpener and it made me feel chronically unhappy. You can’t even see what is going on inside.

David Rees specializes at the artisanal grinding of No. He will also sharpen #2 pencils for $15. Rees wrote, “If your hands can cut a totem pole using a chainsaw, then you can sharpen pencils with a pocketknife.” Otherwise, you’re better to use a classic manual pencil sharpener.

David Rees would be a great choice for me if I could afford his services. The kind of soft-lead pencil I prefer, such as the Blackwing or a quality No. Regular sharpening is necessary. My calculations show that a personal artisanal pencil sharpener would set you back close to 2500 dollars per week to keep your pencils sharpened at least twenty-four times a day for five days.

In the old days, here at The New Yorker, when your pencil point got dull, you just tossed it aside and picked up a new one. Every morning, an office boy came to work with a stack of freshly-sharpened wooden peniels. They were long and straight, with no stubs. Your hand reached out to grab a couple of the pencils that the boy had brought. This sounds dreamlike! I remember thinking that even then, the office boy and his tray with pencils were going to be just like the ivory-billed woodenpecker.

Somewhere along that line, the office man became an electric pencil rounder. The Panasonic model I had was reliable and gave good results if the pencil wasn’t removed from its jaws quickly enough. But it began to jam more and more frequently, no doubt because I was feeding it from my store of defective No. 1. pencils, which I should ship to Fort Dixon Ticonderoga). I suppose the shattered lead was getting stuck in the blades, but of course I couldn’t see in there, much less clean the blades with a soft-bristle toothbrush, as Rees recommends. I decided to try the next best option: unplug it, and then beat it against a desk edge. Rees would prefer a mallet. My next pencil sharpener will probably be the X Acto KS vacuum mounting. This is because my office furniture is not something you can use to drill holes without being noticed. I will be content to browse the Early Office Museum’s antique specimens online, which includes John J.’s offspring. Patent No. 875,129 in Love was received on November 23, 1899. 594,129 on November 23, 1899. My summer plans include a visit to the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum located at Hocking hills Regional Welcome Center in Logan Ohio. It’s amazing that I didn’t know about it. Rees has recommended wines from Portugal and Bordeaux to me in an appendix. It is my intention to also try them.
