Kohl’s Allows Dogs for 2022

Kohl’s stores will not permit dogs from 2022 onwards as it aims to create a safe atmosphere for customers as well as staff. The only exception to this rule is for service animals as defined by the ADA, which Kohl’s stores do allow. Some Kohl’s stores allow pets in-store, however.

Why Doesn’t Every Kohl’s Store Allow Dogs?

Kohl’s pet policy is not made available on their website, so I reached out to a couple of Kohl’s customer service agents to help answer this question.

My constant response was that each store manager is responsible for admitting pets to Kohl’s.

So while many reports state that pets aren’t allowed into Kohl’s stores due to the risk of customers/staff who have allergies, it does ultimately rests upon each store manager.

Additionally, while each Kohl’s store is different, it does seem that most store managers do not allow dogs/pets as they want to prevent any health and safety issues.

Is Kohl’s allowed to allow service animals?

Many Kohl’s will allow service animals, although not all stores have the facility. It is up to your local Kohl’s manager for this decision.

Kohl’s will not refuse to service your animal if it is an absolute requirement (such as those who have sight or hearing problems).

This is not to be confused with the presence of emotional support animals. They are not permitted in all Kohl’s locations.

Kohl’s will ask you if your animal is a Service Animal.

Kohl’s might be able to inquire if your pet qualifies as a service animal. They are not authorized to request service animal verification such as paperwork.

According to ADA, this type of question falls under the discrimination laws. Any employee at a Kohl’s store including the manager could face penalties for asking for papers for service animals.

Are Kohl’s able to refuse me a meal if I need a service animal?

Kohl’s has the right to deny service to customers with service animals if there is a good reason. According to the ADA this means:

The animal’s behavior exhibiting dangerous signs and posing a threat to customers and staff

Animal presence can cause a significant alteration in business function. For example, barking outside a movie theater.

A Kohl’s employee may try to serve you, but they won’t be able to stop your dog or cat from getting in the store.

Since April 2020, Kohl’s now offers curbside purchase and pickup! The process is very simple:

Order online using either the Kohl’s App or website. You will find the option to make a “Kohl’s Drive Up” purchase.

An email with instructions to pick up your order will arrive once it’s complete

You can take your dog along with you to Kohl’s. Then, drive up to the store and pick it up at the Drive Up Orders section.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, there is no straight answer for whether or not Kohl’s will allow dogs into their store. According to their customer service agents, admissions of dogs and cats into stores vary by manager.

In other words: Some locations may allow pets, but others may not. Kohl’s Customer Service recommends looking into your local store’s policy on pets. This can be done for you, or you can telephone/email your Kohls.
